How do I logout of the Harvard PIN System?
You can end your logout of the Harvard PIN System through the Logout menu option located on any Harvard PIN System page, or by clicking on this link . It is recommended that you bookmark the logout page so that you can easily end your login session at any time.
Will I be prompted to enter my credentials if I’ve asked PIN to “Remember Me”?
Yes, it is possible. This can happen for the following reasons:
What is the benefit of the (Single Sign-On) PIN feature?
Remembering your login state makes switching from one PIN-protected website to another more convenient. Furthermore, some applications display information from multiple websites at the same time. If those applications are PIN-protected, a user may need to login several times to make that application work in the absence of Single Sign-On.
PIN saves your login ID so you do not have to reenter this information each time you want to access a website. This feature only works for sites that allow it. When you logout of the PIN System, you will no longer be automatically logged in.
How am I logged into multiple websites even though I only logged in once?
By default, PIN creates a record of your login asserting that you have authenticated, which only lives as long as the browser with which you logged in is open. The PIN System is able to maintain your record for longer periods of time if you choose “Remember Me” when you login. It is an optional feature that you may select when you log in and only works on the computers where you enable it.
Can I ask the Harvard PIN System not to “Remember Me”?
Yes, you can sign out of PIN at any time by clicking the Logout link on the PIN pages or on the Logout button/link that a website may provide.
Should I select the “Remember Me” option?
If you’re concerned that other people might use the computer you’re on to access the website (or parts of certain sites) only you’re entitled to, don’t check the “Remember Me” box. Also, make sure you click Logout and/or close your browser when you leave your computer. This will ensure that the PIN System asks for your username and PIN/password the next time you access any PIN-protected websites.
If you use a shared computer (in a library, Internet cafe, university, airport, or other common area) do not check the “Remember Me” checkbox.
About PIN V2.5
A new version (v2.5) of the PIN System will be released on June 10, 2009.
This release is focused on increasing the usability of the PIN System. Apart from some minor cosmetic changes, the system will incorporate 2 major, new features. Both features are in response to user feedback / request.
Support for multiple screen resolutions (BETA)
We plan to BETA test a solution that will improve usability for users when using the most popular mobile devices we see accessing PIN-based applications. Users using traditional browsers will see no changes as a result of this feature. However, if you access a PIN-protected website using one of these devices the PIN login site that will be presented will have a new look offering all the same functionality as the current login site.
Enhanced Sign-on
Users have expressed frustration that they start each morning by logging into multiple applications by repeatedly entering the same login/PIN information.
Will I be required to Login to certain applications?
Yes, it is possible. Anytime you enter your credentials, the PIN System remembers who you are without the need for you to re-enter credentials to every website.
Your browser can “remember” this information. By default, PIN will remember you as long as a window in the browser you used to login with is open. While the PIN System does not ask you to login each time, websites are still asking the PIN System who you are and the PIN System uses your browser’s “memory” to answer this question.
Will PIN’s ‘look’ change if accessing from a non-mobile (desktop) device?
Yes, the ‘look’ will change slightly.
